About the Pizza Tour

Every year, our group of four (or five!) spends one entire evening tasting and rating a slice of pizza from every “legitimate” pizza place on the Wildwood, NJ boardwalk. Here, we reveal our findings…

Origin & Detail

In 2006, I assembled one of the most ambitious experiments Wildwood has ever witnessed—One full night rating every “legitimate” pizza place on the 2.5 mile Wildwood boardwalk.

To save our stomachs (and wallets), our group of 4 rotate purchasing just one slice at each pizza venue we come across. We then cut the slice into 4 with a pizza cutter and individually rate the slice on a 0 to 5 scale. These numbers are recorded along with the price and we move on to the next pizza place.

At the end of the night, the ratings of each pizza place are averaged and a victor is proclaimed. Another calculation we developed is called the Points per Price Ratio–abbreviated as PPR. This calculation determines who has the “best bang for you buck” by considering the best pizza for the cheapest amount.

A Couple Technical Notes!

  • “Tie” rating? — the cheaper slice wins!
  • Each year, we reverse the starting point of the tour (North Wildwood or Wildwood Crest) in an effort to be fair.
  • In the event of a pizza parlor that has multiple locations, only the first location we come across gets rated.
  • At this point, we do not deviate from the main walk of the boardwalk (We don’t go into the piers or off of the boardwalk)…We stay on the main stretch.
  • Several attempts at defining “legitimate” proved fruitless. From having the word “Pizza” in the name of the place to requiring multiple pizzas on display in the front counter, no consensus has ever been reached. We decide the “qualifying” pizza parlors on a case by case basis at this point in time.
  • Please be aware, these ratings are strictly for fun and a matter of opinion! :)
