Rides of the Past

In browsing Wildwood history online, I came across several fascinating websites remembering rides and attractions from the island’s past. I thought I’d share a few pictures, bits of info and personal thoughts on some of Wildwood’s most interesting history.

Hell Hole

Hell Hole – Regarded by many as “the first Gravitron,” Hell Hole worked on the same principle of centrifuge but with a very wild twist; The floor actually dropped out beneath you during the ride! I imagine this would freak out many unsuspecting first time riders. Add in the fire and smoke special effects and this was a pretty nice package. This ride was in operation until 1980 (approximately) on the Sportland Pier. Once loaded with rides, this pier has been predominantly Go Karts for years now. I doubt Wildwood could still get away with naming a ride “Hell Hole” in these days of “political correctness.”

The Golden NuggetGolden Nugget – The Golden Nugget was one of the most popular and notable rides to ever grace Wildwood. Opening in July, 1960 on Hunt’s Pier, the western mine ride winded its riders in and out of its uniquely themed building, prompting smiles, suspense and screams the whole way through. The ride was last in operation in 1998 as part of the Dinosaur Beach themed pier. Morey’s Pier acquired the attraction, but repairs proved too expensive, and the track and cars have been sold to Knoebels in Elysburg, Pennsylvania. Plans are to revamp and re-open the ride, in some form, in its new location.

The Jack RabbitJack Rabbit – The Jack Rabbit opened to riders in 1919 on Playland Pier on the east side of the boardwalk on Cedar Avenue. Boardwalk reconstruction just a couple months later now re-routed the boards to the west side of the coaster, thus re-routing foot traffic around the entrance of the ride—a hardship the attraction would have to work to overcome for the next 65 years. The Jack Rabbit had a great reputation for its bunny hills and “air time.” It came down in 1984 to make way for smaller rides including Dracula’s Castle and now today, Splash Zone Water Park.

Hopefully you have had the privilege to enjoy some of these great rides from the past…and if so, please share your memories of these wonderful attractions!

The Hellhole was filled with excitement, I remember spending much of my youth begging to go on that ride. When I finally was permitted and the ride began, I realized how foolish i was.
